Shifting from Acclaim to Fury: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein Document Disclosure is Mixed.
Right-leaning responses to the partial release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the censorship procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image appear in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions raise significant concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased openness.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled certain rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Conservative Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the legislative approval to pass a law mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of files that contained little new information.
